Juli is an Edinburgh-based artist and maker who cuts and engraves recycled glass to create joyful assemblages. Born and raised in Costa Rica, Juli moved to Scotland in 2010 to do her MA at the Edinburgh College of Art. Renowned for her charismatic and characterful designs, she has been widely exhibited in some of the world’s foremost craft institutions including the V&A, Make Hauser & Wirth in Somerset and the Corning Glass Museum in the US. Juli believes in the importance of embracing intuitive play as a powerful tool for narrative and exchange in daily life. She uses playfulness, beauty and charm as vehicles for exploring social and environmental issues. Juli has been commissioned by the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, The Scottish Parliament and the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. 

What value does craft have in daily life?  

I believe in thinking with our hands and fostering joy is vital, not only for our survival but more to lead a rich life. Carefully crafted objects connect us to this beauty and help us slow down.

What does Scottishness mean to you?

For me Scottishness represents a 'thoughtful ritual'. Every last detail is considered. We don't make for the sake of making, but more so as an intentioned way to have a positive impact and add value to the world around us.
