Furniture maker Tom grew-up in Royal Deeside and founded Tor with his architect brother Ben, in 2012. Tom is responsible for Tor Furniture, with a workshop in Crathies and showroom in Braemar in the heart of the Cairngorms. Alongside designing, making and supplying furniture to private clients and commercial businesses, Tom is an advocate for Scottish craft and design. He sits on the board of the Scottish Furniture Makers’ Association, and is the driving force behind Ash Rise, an initiative to raise awareness about Ash Dieback disease and the responsible use of ash timber in the design community.
Of Tor’s own ethos, Tom describes the importance of provenance and practicality, hand-in-hand: “The majority of our material is sourced from near our workshop and we can often trace our timber back to the stump. With this, the lived history of the tree becomes integral to the character of the furniture and allows a new life after the natural death of the tree. Our furniture is made for living with and is made to withstand the wear and tear of the day to day; a quiet but constant witness to the future history of family life.”
