The Christmas Spirit

Someone asked us recently if we were already in “The Christmas Spirit”. It’s a funny threshold to consider, and so we discussed what it is exactly that makes us feel festive, as opposed to just happy. We came up with the following list of seasonal idiosyncrasies that jingle our bells at this particular time of year.
Eating miniature versions of rich food, not always at a party. 2000 Miles by The Pretenders. Bells, generally. The reassuring smell of tinsel in pubs. Observing other people’s Office Christmas Parties from afar. Picking Twiglets out of our teeth. The melancholic beauty of fairy lights reflected in puddles. “Christmas Lurpak” - exactly the same. Fingers smelling of tangerine peel. Ribbons. Repeatedly picking-up Christmas cards that just WON’T STAY UP! Greenery becoming brownery alarmingly quickly. Measuring the passing of time by shrinking cheeses and the ebb of the Gaviscon bottle - a symbiotic relationship. Collecting commitments for healthier habits in the recesses of one’s brain, to be addressed come January – just not yet….
