An offspring of the Monument Candlestick project, James’s Pocket candlesticks are destined to light and delight dining tables for decades.

In James’s words: “These grew from the Monument candlesticks, where I found myself playing with the simple top sections, adding them to the open mouths of jars, bottles and jugs around the studio. I love the idea that the body of the candlestick can be something improvised and informal - or that the candle holder can simply sit directly on a table-top. It fits with how I use candles in my own home, as spontaneous gestures at cosiness or intimacy and you can carry them to your tryst in your pocket. The making process is similarly quick and casual - a small drop-out mould, with a lemon squeezer to press in the ribbed hole for the candle. The metallic, golden-brown glaze is designed to catch the light and set up an interplay with glittering glassware nearby.”

What is your favourite aspect of Scottish winter?

“Growing up in the English Westcountry, I struggle with the darkness of the deep Winter months far more than the cold and wet. So my favourite aspect of Scottish Winter is the thrill of approaching Spring, when the rapidly lengthening days leave me breathless with anticipation.”
