Like an extra from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, Laura Lees’ Sweetie Footstool combines riotous modernity with the gaudiness of bygone times. Taking a found, golden gilt wooden footstool, Laura has festooned it with her freehand machine embroidery, fastening textile and furniture together with gold twisted cord. The textile is formed from embroidering the leftover threads gathered from Laura’s workshop, turning waste matter into fancy material once again. Ingenious. Yet one more reason to fall head over heels with the artistry and skills of Laura Lees.
