Sutherland Sentinel 1 & 2

Description
Oliver’s works explore the essential qualities and characteristics of natural materials in contrast and communion, and with Sutherland Sentinel, he has introduced the element of fire to the mix. These are striking, ceremonial, sentinels, made from charred larch, supporting a Lewisian gneiss stone, into which a candle is anchored.
In Oliver’s own words: “I shaped the Highland Larch with a chainsaw, starting with a small triangle shape marked on the top of the log, and I proceeded to cut away undecided of the final shape. I kept accents of the original shape of the tree towards the base of the piece. The result is a loosely geometric triangle form, riding a line between natural and crafted structures.”
“Charring the Larch felt appropriate as a symbolic act of the dark days of Highland winter. The form of the smooth, natural, tumbled stone holding the cathedral-sized candle is a stable foundation and creates a spire-like composition. They point to something luminating and transcendent. I completed the piece by inlaying a 'stone knot' where an original knot in the larch had formed. A brass socket anchors the candle. The elements of stone, wood, metal and fire come together as my response to A Scottish Enlightenment.”
