Description

Matthew's images are weird, in the Old Scots sense of feeling a little eerie and uncanny. He cites Bill Brandt’s nude studies as a source of great inspiration. There’s also something of Caspar David Friedrich here; the lone figure with their back to us facing a world beyond our own. “Against the great tradition of Scottish landscape photography, there’s a certain cheekiness too of course,” he laughs. “For all that I have overcome personally, ultimately what makes me happiest is when people laugh at the sheer gumption!”

Together with Matthew, we liked the idea of printing them large for impact. The effect is immersive. Instead of feeling like remote viewers or voyeurs, we feel transported into the landscapes. For this reason also, we felt the images should not be contained behind glass. Our choice to box-frame them at Bard reflects our preference of celebrating the works more as three-dimensional objects than two-dimensional images.
